This GIMP (GNU) tutorial demonstrates how to apply a 3D Outline Script to text.

You can quickly Undo a step at any time by pressing Ctrl then Z. Alternatively, click a previous Undo History snapshot - Windows then Dockable Dialogues then click Undo History. In addition, to Zoom in (or Zoom out) of your image; from the top menu, choose View then select a Zoom Tool from the subsequent drop-down list.

Note
Ensure the Layers and the Undo History Palettes are visible, and then drag them into position over your workspace - (Windows then Dockable Dialogues - then click Layers and Undo History).

Launch GIMP & Organise Its Workspace & Palettes

1/
Create a New Image, and set the following Width and Height and Fill with attributes. Alternatively, select Width and Height dimensions of your choice.

Note
If you are not printing your work, set a Resolution of 72.000 Pixels. If you are printing your work, a resolution of 300.000 Pixels will be better.

2/
Now, from the left-side Toolbox, activate the Text Tool. (
Text Tool Tutorial).

Note
The size of the Text is determined by your
Image’s Resolution (Size) - and the look you are seeking.

Set the Foreground Colour Swatch to the colour you would like your text to be -
I am selecting Solid Black.

After you have set your Text attributes: left-click once over the White Image. And from the subsequent Gimp Text Editor dialogue box, type in a Text String of your choice, and then click Close - as illustrated below.

3/
From the left-side Toolbox, activate the Move Tool.

Then left-click over your workspace’s Text, and drag your Text to a central position - as illustrated below.

4/
Now, right-click the Text Layer - and from the subsequent drop-down list, click Alpha to Selection.

Your text will now be isolated by the following Selection Marquee.

5/
Now, from the top menu, choose Filters then choose Alpha To Logo and then choose 3D Outline. And from the subsequent Script-Fu 3D Outline dialogue box, enter settings of your choice, and then click OK.

Congratulations, you have successfully applied GIMP’s 3D Outline Script to your text.

Change The White Background: Tip
To remove the White Background: left-click to remove the Bump Map and the Drop Shadow’s Visibility (Eye) Icon. This temporarily hides the Layers’ Contents - as illustrated below.

Fill Layer Tip
Now you have removed the White Background, you can create a Fill Layer, and Fill it with either a Solid Colour, Pattern or a Gradient - as demonstrated by my Create A Fill Layer
Tutorial Here.

You will find, that after you have applied the Fill Layer and dragged it to the bottom of the Layers Stack, that your Outlined Text’s Drop Shadow has been lost - as illustrated above. If you would like to apply a Drop Shadow to your Outlined Text; activate the Pattern Layer - as illustrated below. Then from the top menu, choose Filters then choose Light and Shadow and then choose Drop Shadow. And from the subsequent Script-Fu Drop Shadow dialogue box, enter Drop Shadow settings of your choice, and then click OK.

After applying a Drop Shadow, your image will resemble the following.

To fill the transparent areas with your Fill Choice; create a New Layer and drag it to the bottom of the Layer Stack. And with the Bucket Fill Tool, Fill it with your choice of Fill.

6/
To finish, from the top menu, choose Image and then choose Flatten Image.

Sharpen Tip
Your image will benefit from a Sharpening Filter: Filters then Enhance

7/
Congratulations, your 3D Outlined Text is complete,
and is ready to Optimise and Save.
