This lesson demonstrates how to change an object’s colour by employing the Colourise command and Alpha Channels. To work along, right-click the red rose above, and save it to your PC, then open it onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace.
I have marked this tutorial Beginners +, however, due to the technique involved, I would
say, realistically, it is between Beginners + and Intermediate, depending on your confidence and experience.

Think of an Alpha Channel as a place where you can store, and retrieve, selection marquees. Once a selection marquee has been saved to an Alpha Channel, then saved as a .psp file, it is permanently embedded into the image. This means, you can retrieve the selection from its Alpha Channel after the file has been closed, then reopened. This is helpful when sending embedded Alpha Channels to other Paint Shop Pro users - or saving them for yourself, to use at a later date. If, after you have opened your file, you cannot see your selection, from the top menu, choose Selections then choose Load/Save Selection - (from Alpha Channel).
Open an image onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace. (You are welcome to download the Rose Image I am working with Here).
Then from the left-side Tools Toolbar, select the Magic Wand Tool.
And enter the following attributes into the Tool Options Palette or Ribbon.

The Magic Wand’s Tolerance setting is based on my image’s resolution; when utilising your own, you may need to adjust the Tolerance accordingly.
Now, left-click over the rose’s black background, in the area illustrated below. And the rose and outer border will be surrounded by the following Selection Marquee.
If you are unhappy with the selection marquee’s position; from the upper menu, select the Undo arrow . And reapply the Magic Wand - adjusting the Tolerance as necessary.
From the upper menu, choose Selections then choose Invert. The Selection Marquee will now isolate just the rose and stem - as illustrated below.
